Our Lady of Aparecida – Patroness of Brazil

They wrapped a statue they found in cloth and continued to fish. Then their nets were full. That was exactly how Our Lady of Aparecida was named by a few fishermen in Brazil. Blessed be Our Lady of Aparecida, who is our latest WYD 2013 Patron Saint.
You may be wondering – What sort of impact on Catholic spirituality does Our Lady of Aparecida have on the people of Brazil?

In October of 1717, Dom Pedro de Almedida, travelled from Sao Paulo to Minas Gerais. During his journey, he passed through a small city in the Paraiba river valley called Guaratinqueta.

During his time there, the local people had decided to put together a great party that would require an incredible number of fish. Gathered together were three fishermen who had a special devotion to Our Lady of the Immaculate Conception. Prior to fishing, all three men plead to God that they would be blessed with more than enough fish.

At that time, one of the men named Felipe Pedroso got on his knees swiftly and prayed saying, “Mother of God and our Mother; we need to find fish!”

Lone and behold, after not being able to find anything for hours, they cast their net out for a final time near the Port of Itaguagu. To their amazement, they hauled in the body of a statue, as well as the statue’s head. After cleaning the statue, they discovered that it was Our Lady of the Immaculate Conception. They named the statue Our Lady of Aparecida. They wrapped a statue they found in cloth and continued to fish. All of a sudden, through the grace of God, their nets were full.

Our Lady’s feast is celebrated in the Universal Church on October 12, which is marked as a national holiday throughout Brazil. Blessed John Paul II, during his pontificate, blessed the shrine that was dedicated to Our Lady of Aparecida in 1980. Today, her shrine is visited by more than five million visitors.

Through her intercession, we pray that Our Lady of Aparceida will continue to be at the heart of every Catholic in Brazil and intercede for the millions of pilgrims that will soon travel to Rio in 2013.

Stay tuned to WYDCentral for your next WYD Patron Saint, in our lead up to Rio de Janeiro.

The WYD Cross and Icon of Mary head to Brazil

This coming Sunday, September 18th, the Archdiocese of São Paulo and the National Conference of Bishops of Brazil (CNBB) will host the first preparatory event leading to World Day Youth Day 2013.

The event will mark the arrival to Brazil of the WYD Cross and the Icon of Our Lady and will be attended by the Archbishop of São Paulo, Cardinal Odilo Pedro Scherer, the Apostolic Nuncio to Brazil, Dom Lorenzo Baldisseri and the president of the CNBB, Cardinal Dom Raymundo Damasceno.

The missionaries Canção Nova (new song) will be in charge of animation and the event will feature testimonials from young people who participated in previous WYDs, theatrical performances, official launch of  the World Youth Day Rio 2013 website, as well as performances by various well-known Brazilian Catholic singers such as Fr. Fábio de Mello, Father Reginaldo Manzotti, Father Juarez Castro, Dunga, Life Glitters, Eliana Ribeiro and others.

“The Cross is always a sign that Jesus Christ calls young people to meet Him. Similarly, the Icon of Our Lady indicates the maternal presence of the Mother of Jesus with the followers of Christ,” says Cardinal Odilo Scherer.

Between now and July 2013, the Cross and Icon will travel to the 275 dioceses in Brazil. There are also plans for celebrations in 19 Brazilian cities, all under the name Bote Fé.

In December 2012, the Cross and Icon will leave Brazil and  visit Paraguay, Uruguay, Chile and Argentina. They return to Brazil in January 2013. The final leg of the Cross and Icon journey will take place in the South of Minas, in the Vale do Paraiba, and finally in the state of Rio de Janeiro, where they arrive in April 2013.

World Youth Day will take place in Rio de Janeiro from July 23-28, 2013.

Pope announces theme for WYD Rio de Janeiro 2013

Pope Benedict XVI announces the theme for the next World Youth Day in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil, in 2013: “Go and make disciples of all peoples” (Matthew 28:19).

En Route to Rio

Most avid WYD fans who were watching carefully during the final mass at Cuatro Vientos in Madrid noticed a team of young people from Brazil receiving the WYD cross from a delegation of Spanish youth. Normally the handover of the cross is done on the Palm Sunday following WYD. This time the handover was done at the closing Mass for a few reasons, the first being that Brazil has only two years to prepare for their event, and the second being that the cross has to travel through 275 dioceses before the youth of the world arrive in Rio in 2013.

The cross and icon are scheduled to arrive in Sao Paolo Brazil this September 18th. The Archdiocese of Sao Paolo has planned a prayer vigil with the youth of Sao Paolo. According to the website Jovens Conectados, the official website of the youth ministry office of the Brazilian Bishops conference, the vigil will take place in Campo Marte and will feature music by Catholic bands such as Rosa de Saron, testimonies by young people who have participated in other world youth days, and a Mass celebrated by the cardinal archbishop of Sao Paolo, Odilo Scherer.
