The Mayor of Rio de Janeiro, Eduardo Paes, established a committee as the city begins preparations for WYD 2013. Members of the committee include Rio’s Chief secretary, Luiz Antônio Guaraná, who will serve as Executive coordinator. More than that, Carlos Roberto Osório will serve as Operations coordinator and Antônio Pedro Figueira de Mello will look after the logistics as Operations coordinator.
The committee will act as a liaison between the state government and the Archdiocese of Rio de Janeiro.
Following last August’s announcement that Rio would play host to WYD 2013, city council created a special committee with the objective that efforts would be made in supervising overall preparations for the event, scheduled to take place from July 23-28, 2013.
Carlo Caiado, committee President and member of city council is ecstatic that the world will be turning towards Rio de Janeiro for 2013.
“Seeing as the majority of Brazil, as a country is Catholic, we are honoured to have been chosen to host WYD,” he said.
“Therefore, we must provide services of great quality so visitors have information and comfort and can enjoy their experience as much as possible.”
Caiado added that issues such as hospitality, public transportation, security and public venues for the event must be prioritized.
“The expressive number of visitors expected to arrive in the city for WYD deserve as much attention as the World Cup 2014 and the Olympic Games in 2016,” he said.
