Aparecida: a place of history and a path for the future

One week before WYD Rio, Salt and Light’s Fr. Thomas Rosica, CSB and Sebastian Gomes traveled to the historic shrine of Our Lady of Aparecida. Here in May 2007, the Bishops of Latin America and the Caribbean, together with Pope Benedict XVI, opened their Fifth General Conference to discuss the future of the Church on the continent.

One of the architects of the final document, called the Aparecida Document, was then Cardinal Jorge Mario Bergoglio, known today as Pope Francis. In this highly important text we see a meeting of the two great minds of Benedict and Francis, and a roadmap for the future of the Church that is now being implemented on the universal level.
